n722580912_355675_5846.jpgAs many of you already know, last Friday was my birthday. I had high hopes of a sneaking in a barbecue on my building’s roof patio on Saturday, but the weather served up one of the rainiest days of the past two weeks on exactly that day.

Roaring Twenties Picnic

21 July, 2007; 14:00 Joel 4 comments

A friend from my earlier stay in Stockholm has been planning, along with three of her friends, this picnic for nearly six months. My understanding is that the idea came when she somehow acquired a white blanket that she didn’t particularly like, so they thought they needed to find a way to “accidentally” spill red wine on it. Spilling wine led to picnicking, which led to roaring twenties.

This, by the way, led to substituting red wine for champagne, because at this point the original purpose was long superseded by the loftier goal of going back in time and reproducing a twenties-style afternoon party. This loftier goal required all attendees to wear very light-colored clothing, appropriate for that era. The event was replete with a champagne pyramid, cucumber sandwiches, and other decadent hors d’oeuvres. It was also a real marathon…it lasted from 2pm until midnight, and then the party continued as groups split for various night clubs around Stockholm. Some pics below (click to enlarge):

BBQ in Bergshamra

Oh wow, has it really been almost two weeks since I last wrote in here? Hmm…well, there are no good excuses, I guess it took less time than I expected for the summer to become busy. Part of the reason is that I’ve been successful finding a few other foreigners who live in Stockholm (and, hence, don’t have these big pre-established social networks that native Swedes have). I first met up with them through a Meet-Up group for North American Expats in Stockholm that had just recently formed, so they hadn’t run out of steam yet like many groups like this do. (Actually, I think it’s just that social groups quickly grow out of Meet-Up: once a number of people find each other and start hanging out together, and they find that they don’t need to meet any more new people and they already have each others’ phone numbers, so there’s no need for Meet-Up any longer…that hasn’t happened yet with this Meet-Up group, but I’m guessing after a year it will.)Read more…
