Tied-Scores, All Around

I assume you all have been following the action in the World Cup, right?

What’s that you say, “WHAT World Cup?”…

Women’s World CupThis World Cup!

Oh, don’t worry, I’ll update you on the important points. Already, the opening match saw Group A’s Germany beat Argentina 11-0, the largest point-spread and highest-scoring match in the history of the Women’s World Cup. In the other Group A match, England tied Japan.

The tournament is, of course, especially interesting for me because Sweden and the US are in the same group, Group B. Moreover, this group is thought to be the toughest of all four groups, with not only top-ranked USA and #3-ranking Sweden, but also up-and-comers North Korea (#5) and not-to-be-dismissed Nigeria (#24). Both the US and Sweden were looking to get a lead in the rankings and make the rest of the tough group play a bit easier, but neither succeeded: both matches ended in ties. Especially surprising was Nigeria’s tying goal in the last 10 minutes against Sweden. So as we have it now, the Group B standings are:

Team Pts Pld W D L GF GA GD
Flag of North Korea Korea DPR 1 1 0 1 0 2 2 0
Flag of the United States USA 1 1 0 1 0 2 2 0
Flag of Nigeria Nigeria 1 1 0 1 0 1 1 0
Flag of Sweden Sweden 1 1 0 1 0 1 1 0

All tied. Anything can happen! Stay tuned…Sweden and USA play on Thursday Friday at 2 a.m. Pacific Time, then North Korea and Nigeria at 5 a.m. Who’s staying up to watch?

UPDATE: My mistake, the game is on Friday, not Thursday. I assume none of you actually stayed up tonight to watch, right?
