Game Recap: USA vs. Sweden

For those of you that didn’t follow yesterday’s action in the Women’s World Cup, here’s a recap on Group B, most especially the USA-Sweden game:

The Sweden-USA game started, in the first ten minutes, with Sweden dominating the ball and taking it to the US goal many times, but with no shots on goal. After the Americans warmed up, though, they started to dominate the ball, showing quicker speed and ball control all around. Near the end of the first half, Abby Wambach took one off of a penalty kick. In the second half, she repeated the task in open play, converting a quick drive and shooting it in before anyone knew what had happened. The Swedes took several great shots during the second half, but none managed to get through goalkeeper Hope Solo. USA won 2-0.

Team Pts Pld W D L GF GA GD
Flag of the United States USA 4 2 1 1 0 4 2 +2
Flag of North Korea Korea DPR 4 2 1 1 0 4 2 +2
Flag of Nigeria Nigeria 1 2 0 1 1 1 3 −2
Flag of Sweden Sweden 1 2 0 1 1 1 3 −2

The win for the US nearly assures advancing out of group play. But for the Swedes, this was a devastating result. With North Korea beating Nigeria, also by 2-0, the US and North Korea are now well ahead in the group. In the final games, Sweden must beat North Korea by a 3-point margin to knock them out of the top two slots. Nigeria must do the same to the USA to survive, but given their level of play it is extremely unlikely. These games are both on Tuesday at 5 a.m. Pacific time.

Thanks for keeping me informed regarding World Cup play. Either my newspaper is not covering the games well, or I am missing it on the days I actually read the sports page. Maybe the Spanish TV stations will have coverage.
    Happy Birthday on the 28th.
